Smartscore lite, which is included with Finale, won't convert PDF files but the full version claims to do so. Ha anyone out there used it; I fancy the idea but don't want to spend that much money without knowing how well it works.

I don't know about Smartscore or others, but Photoscore, which is the program paired with Sibelius will take PDF input (I think directly in the latest version and with some accessory program in earlier versions). If at all possible, if there is a PDF file available online, you should try to input directly rather than going through another print/scan cycle.
