Tom - If you can get a recent version of Finale (2007 or after) this
is what I do to transpose parts:
Print each page of the the IMSLP part (or any other part).
Scan each page at 300 dpi, output to a TIFF file (the OCR program in
Finale requires a TIFF file at 300 dpi).
Launch Finale. Within Finale there is an OCR (optical character
recognition) program called SmartScore Lite.
Under "Scanning: Smartscore Lite" in the File menu, choose "Import an
Existing TIFF file".
Smartscore Lite will convert the imported TIFF file (single page) into
a single Finale file.
If your original part is 10 pages you will have 10 individual Finale
files. That is not a problem. You can copy and paste each successive
Finale page into the first Finale page, creating a single document.
Note recognition in Smartscore Lite is quite good. I do little note-
changing in the resulting Finale File.
However, current music OCR programs do a poor job of recognizing
dynamics, slurs, articulations, measure numbers, etc.,
so you will spend tens of hours entering those via the computer
keyboard. Fire up your espresso machine!
