Dear List,
I would recommend that those of you daunted by the task of
ornamenting the Mozart Concerto and Quintet begin with a simpler,
more skeletally-constructed piece like any of Mozart's Five
Divertimenti for Three Basset-Horns (most commonly played on two
clarinets and bassoon).
Try adding simple things like trills, mordents, and turns. Then try
displacing octave, and filling in thirds. Change some rhythms, add a
different arc to the music. And LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN to skilled ornamenters.
This is a very fun skill to explore with others, so get another
person or two to play the pieces with you.
Good luck!
Sean
