Absolutely. I also seem to remember that the perception of sound quality
also depends very much on the "attack" by which I mean the very start of a
note not the violent use of breath or tongue. You can take a series of notes
record from a piano and by adjustment of the first fraction of a second
create the impression of an organ. I wish I could remember more all to do
with the formant I think. Somebody out there should be better informed.....

I totally agree. But I would propose that folks who are curious find a
waveform (signal) generator, hook it up to an audio amplifier and speaker,
and
then "listen" to the audio output of sine, sawtooth, square, etc. waveforms
and note how the brain perceives each of the sounds produced and then
compare
them to those produced by various musical instruments.
