I used to be one of those kids who played the Mozart as a youngster, but
didn't care for it. Partly due to the fact that it was much easier to play
then the Nielsen, thus how could it possibly be that good if it was so easy
to play.
Well 30 some years later, I've eaten my words time and time again. I grown
to respect the Mozart Concerto as a wonderful example of nuance, color, and
structure.
It wasn't until I started playing the accompaniment part for my students
that I began to appreciate the harmonic quality, not to mention the
brilliant simplistic approach to the accompaniment.
I just played the 2nd movement 2 weeks ago for my mother's funeral, as it
was her favorite piece from all my years of practicing at home. Playing it
for such an important event reinforced what this piece has become to me.
I knew my mother was beaming with a wide smile as she sat above listening to
her son ( and granddaughter)play this piece. This also marked the first
time my daughter and I performed in public. My daughter, who is a piano
major, is finally starting to appreciate the quality of this piece.
