A square wave is also rich in harmonics - an infinite number of odd
harmonics, in fact. I think this is what was implied, since a clarinet has a
lot of odd harmonics (but by no means only odd, and by no means infinite).
You're right though, it is not a pure sine wave, and a flute is much nearer.

The clarinet is rich in harmonics and its waveform is not a square wave at
all.
I would say the flute is much closer to a pure sine wave than the clarinet.
