You were thinking of Gerard Schwarz?

In any orchestra conducted by Hovhaness, one needed to make an effort to ignore him. He was an Olympic class bad conductor. His favorite thing was to extend his arms and shake them. I don't know what he wanted but he did that from time to time. Somewhere I'm on a recording of his called Alan Hovhaness's wind music. Gerrry what's his name (trumpet, former conductor of the Seattle orchestra) was on that recording too. So was Cohen, now in Cleveland, and lots of others.
