Right. People develop personalities on mailing lists. Who needs the
resume, unless you are an occasional poster. You get a sense for what
sorts of things people know. Who are good for show, who are good for
shadow cat stories and as stand in mothers, who are good for making
you feel good. Who are pedantic and insist on strict logic, who lurk,
who make shakespearean commentary on everything... With wonderful
summaries accurate in spirit but not at all accurate literally.

My friend just asked what a clarin is (looking for a root). As far as
I know there is no such thing as a clarin; that clarinet comes from
clarion (trumpet) and I referred him to Ambrose Bierce's devils'
dictionary.

CLARIONET, n. An instrument of torture operated by a person with
cotton in his ears. There are two instruments that are worse than a
clarionet=97two clarionets.

Can anyone help me save the reputation of the clarinet?
