I don't know who told you that, but it's complete fiction, and always
has been. Besides, this is not "the web". This is a mailing list.

Many do, but that doesn't make it right, or socially acceptable in every
situation.

That depends entirely on the customs and traditions of the venue. This
is not CB radio or some high school slam site, where we choose avatars
and handles so we can sling insults at each other anonymously. This is
a mailing list for the exchange of academic and technical information on
a topic of serious interest. The tradition here is the use of real
names and identities. There are people here who truly are
world-renowned experts in their field. They have an incredible depth of
experience to offer, but their advice depends on knowing a little about
the askers of the questions.
