I use the mouthpiece that came with my clarinet. It was kind of weird
when I first got it because it was a bit broader than the mouthpiece I
had been playing on before. I think the mouthpiece and clarinet may
have been french; it was a noblet/leblanc. Anyone know whether you
have to know the model number to know whether it is a french design in
that case.

At one point I turned my two screw ligature around. It reformed to
accomodate the reed after a while. I don't think it scratched my
mouthpiece and if it did, as far as I can tell, it would only be a
cosmetic issue b/c it would be the opposite side of the facing. As
far as tension goes, I would finger tighten them as much as I could,
figuring that my hand was the same strength regardless of which screw
I was turning. Especially since the ends of the ligature did not meet
and the screws moved freely, and it did not appear that uneven screw
stiffness would affect how well I could tighten them. My teacher gave
me an old leather band ligature when I started lessons. I haven't
used anything else since (except for rare, isolated, occasions).
