(1, 2) I prefer downloadable files to buying physical CDs because the files
take no physical space on my shelves and I don't need to go to store or wait
for a shipment to reach me. When I buy a CD the first thing I do is "rip" it
to my computer's hard drive, which allows me to listen to the music on any
computer on my home network, my TV through a Media Manager program that
connects it to my computer, or the portable digital player I take with me to
the gym. I prefer lossless download formats - usually FLAC - so that I have
the flexibility to use them as is or convert to WAVs, and I can convert the
tracks to MP3 or WMA format for my digital player to listen away from home
(it isn't practical to use most portable CD players while walking on a
treadmill). If I really want to listen using a CD player, I can always burn
the physical disc myself.

That said, many people still prefer to own and be able to handle physical
media. I don't think it's time yet to ditch physical CDs, but making the
music available also as lossless downloads is ideal.

(3) I generally download an entire piece (even if I'm only interested in a
single movement). If I'm downloading the contents of a commercial CD, I
generally download the whole thing.

(4) The *lack* of physical packaging is, to me, a good reason to download
instead of buying discs. But the artwork and, even more, the textual
material (liner notes) about the music and the performers *are* important to
me. Those should always be available in PDF files or some other kind of
download along with the audio files themselves.

Subject: [kl] survey: all digital vs CD release

I am helping my husband, composer Edward Marcus, work through a release of
some of his chamber music for clarinet with a label in New England. We have

a choice of releasing it as a traditional CD with digital downloads
available on Amazaon, etc., or simply releasing it in purely digital format.

If we do digital only, we get digital download cards that we can sell or
give away, which allows for the download of the entire album. The artwork
online is pretty much the same as would be done for a physical CD, but you
may need to be directed to a different page for more details on players,
etc. I believe it would be available as mp3, wav, or lossless files,
depending on your preferences.

1. How do you feel about the need for a physical CD?
2. How important to you is the the availability of a physical CD?
3. Do you prefer to simply download the tracks and works you are most
interested in, and leave the rest?
4. Does the physical CD and packaging make a huge difference to you in
whether you would listen to the music?

Thanks for your help!
Penny Ward Marcus
