Personally, I am a BIG fan of having the physical CD. But then, I am also a
collector of old 78 rpm jazz records, so I suppose that would be only
natural. When I record the big band I play in, I always burn the results to
disk, and make inserts and labels to go with them, even if just for my own
and the leader's amusement. I very much appreciate having the documentation
that accompanies CDs and LPs. And they are impervious to crashes, software
upgrades, etc. I doubt that it will be too long before the CD will leave
us, to be replaced by a memory chip, with no moving parts involved. But it
had better include documentation, preferable in a format that can be
referred to as you drive down the road listening. I have downloaded a few
albums, but never individual tracks, from iTunes, but I really only do that
if I get a gift certificate. I don't want to spend actual MONEY on a
download. It is too ephemeral.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!

Subject: [kl] survey: all digital vs CD release

I am helping my husband, composer Edward Marcus, work through a release of
some of his chamber music for clarinet with a label in New England. We have

a choice of releasing it as a traditional CD with digital downloads
available on Amazaon, etc., or simply releasing it in purely digital format.

If we do digital only, we get digital download cards that we can sell or
give away, which allows for the download of the entire album. The artwork
online is pretty much the same as would be done for a physical CD, but you
may need to be directed to a different page for more details on players,
etc. I believe it would be available as mp3, wav, or lossless files,
depending on your preferences.

1. How do you feel about the need for a physical CD?
2. How important to you is the the availability of a physical CD?
3. Do you prefer to simply download the tracks and works you are most
interested in, and leave the rest?
4. Does the physical CD and packaging make a huge difference to you in
whether you would listen to the music?

Thanks for your help!
Penny Ward Marcus
