I am, unfortunately, not from Texas (though I almost moved there ca. 1979),
but my wife is from a Texas family so old that she is a memberof the
Daughters of the Republic of Texas. To be in that august group, you have to
have been in Texas before the revolution against Mexico in the 1830s. One
of her great-great (etc.) uncles was both the surgeon general in the Texian
army at the time of the revolution and also a working physician in the Texas
navy where he was captured in a naval battle and put in military prison by
the Mexicans. He escaped.
