Yes absolutely. Yet an interpretation must have a reference point from which those variations can arise. I suppose that would be the basis of good or bad taste.

Our orchestra played a whole programme of Bach transcriptions for Bach Day at the BBC Proms this year from composers such as Stowkowski, Walton, Grainger, Bantock and Resphigi. It was quite difficult to play if you tried to be authentic about it because of the way it had been re- composed so we had to play it all in the worst possible taste and then it kind of worked.
