How boring if every player has to slavishly follow the accepted wisdom
concerning the composers intentions, assuming the composer actually had
specific intentions. Thank god no two renditions of the Mozart Clarinet
Concerto are the same and thank god there is no RIGHT way to play the piece
just various good and bad ways.

It's an option, but doesn't really convey what I want. One reason why
terms like "cantabile" or even "espressivo" are nice is that they carry
a sense of a particular _kind_ of expression, not just that the player
should be free to interpret the text "at their liberty".

(For comparison, "Adagio" carries a weight of stylistic implication that
the literal English translation -- "slowly" -- doesn't. That's why we
can speak of "an Adagio" but not "a slowly"...:-)
