Subj: [kl] Firebird Trill

Dear list,

I was reminded again today of a common misconception about Igor
Stravinsky's "Firebird" Suite of 1919. A highly advanced student of
mine (recent graduate of one of the countries most prestigious
conservatories) played the "Variation of the Firebird" for me
today. He has been told repeatedly by many people, including the
principal clarinetists of many major orchestras, that the first
clarinet trill in that movement is a whole-step: C-natural to
D-natural (written).

This is a mistake in the part and score.

It is supposed to be a half-step: C-natural to D-flat (written) -
exactly as it appears in the recap of this movement.

Can we all please lay this to rest once and for all?!

Here is my evidence:
In the original 1911 ballet, the E-flat (D) clarinet part has the
solo and has a half-step trill. You can see this in the part, in the
score, AND hear it on Stravinsky's own recording of it.

Clint Niewig, who prepared the wonderful corrected Kalmus scores that
most orchestras now use, has mentioned that there are still mistakes
in his first edition - one of which was this half-step trill that was
not corrected.

Perhaps we can all join together and correct this mistake for all
clarinetists. Please help.

Thank you,

Sean Osborn
