I manufacture clarinet bells, barrels, and mouthpieces. I use an odd old
method of trial and error, and though I have measured with a ruler the nodes
on the clarinet and retain inside and outside specs on my mouthpieces let me
say this about the bell. While not controlling the pitch or sound quality
quite as much as the mouthpiece and barrel the bell does change the whole
overtone series. An important fact to remember. If he length the bore is
extended, whether there is a step in the bell like some makers have started
doing, the length, the flair, and the amount of wood all have an influence
on the final product. I have found like mouthpieces and barrels one bell
does not improve the response, projection, and tonal colors of every
clarinet. The bell MUST be made to match the particular clarinet and its
idiosyncrasies. The bells I use on my various clarinets are not
interchangeable for the best results. Go figure? That's my best and final
answer as I understand it today.
