I'll offer my solution to the brace/appliance situation. I had to have a
contraption (no, I don't know the real word) on my lower teeth, and it hurt
the inner part of my lower lip, and made my sound uncontrolled. A old
teacher of mine suggested buying EZO Denture Cushions, upper, heavy. You
cut them in half (or perhaps thirds), soften a piece in your mouth, and bend
it over, with the largest part between the brace and the lip. Someone else
suggested getting a dentist to make a plastic covring piece, to accomplish
the same thing, but that was a lot more money. The EZO worked great.

Now, I wish I still had to do this. I had to have all of my upper teeth
pulled, and am waiting on getting my denture. I'll be glad to go back to my
bass clarinet!
