I don't know if this is the same thing, but ... my clarinet prof at
university was originally from, and got his undergrad degree in, the UK --
many years before -- and he would refer to the register key as the speaker
key, observing that if the opening of the speaker key wasn't correct, or if
you let "belly lint" collect in it, the sound could be muffled, particularly
in the throat register, as well as monkey up the tuning of the whole
instrument. He would use Scotch tape to change how far the key could open.
It was quite instructive. I always tried to keep belly lint out of mine. <g>
