Dear Klarinet,

What is a speaker bush? Is this a proper term?

I tried searching the Klarinet archives for speaker bush, but mostly
came up with posts by Richard Bush. The same came up for
speaker+bush. I tried "speaker bush" which gave me no results.
However, speaker AND bush NOT richard bush brought up two results.

The relevant result from speaker AND bush NOT richard bush was posted
by Brian Ackerman on Sat, 22 Mar 1997. It said, in part:
>If the crack goes through a tonehole, that tonehole should be properly
>bushed to prevent it from leaking. The speaker pipe should be OK though, as
>it is already bushed.

>From this and experience with my own clarinet, I am guessing that
"speaker bush" refers to the metal reinforcement around the hole for
the register key, but I don't have other sources to refer to at this
time. I believe I have heard of "bushings" before. I took my car
into the repair shop because it was making a strange noise, which
turned out to be a pair of dry sway bar bushings. When I looked those
up they looked like two washers connected by a cylinder - sort of a 3
dimensional washer, covering the bar portion of a hinge. This fits
the form of the metal sheath lining my clarinet register key
tone-hole. Is this correct? Is there anything else interesting to
know about a speaker bush or other bushes (or bushings) used on
clarinets?

Thank you for your kind attention.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Jones

P.S. Regarding whether "speaker bush" is a proper term: I am
following the article, as it is my only source at the moment. Various
speaker bush google searches brought up mostly George and Laura Bush
links and nothing on clarinet; boolean logic didn't help either; the
most drastic search I tried was: speaker AND bush NOT "Laura bush" NOT
"George Bush" NOT "George W Bush" NOT "George W. Bush", which still
brought up "George W. Bush" links.
