> "confused if he had used different fingering"? Huh....doesn't he know the "regular" fingerings related to written notes? Such a great player to be so easily "confused". ;-) I guess this would indicate he would be easily confused when playing
Bb clarinet and moving between Bb parts and transposed C parts? Just a thought.<

I agree with you, but it's what Ron Reuben said. He also said that he
had learned to play all the A bass parts on the Bb instrument, saw no
need to play them on anything else, and that becoming a professional
bass player required the acquisition of this skill. I think that his
comments were worth reporting.

Tony -

I think that, as between a player, no matter how good, who is not a
bass clarinet specialist, and the bass clarinetist of the Philadelphia
Orchestra, I would trust the latter. Certainly it was worthwhile to
ask his opinion, and his response was worth quoting. For what my
opinion is worth, I agree with Ron Reuben that any professional bass
player must be able to play parts in A on the Bb bass.

I also suggest that personal attacks are undignified, and I will
respond only to your comments on clarinet matters.
