Subj: [kl] transposing on tteh Bb bass clarinet

Dear bass clarinet transposers!

Well this Rachmaninov 2 issue surely has succeeded in drawing nice
and not so nice comments from colleagues.

I have a question in related to transposing. When playing the bass
clarinet professionally in the Amsterdam Police Band i was supposed to
substitute the 2nd bassoon sometimes. (Bass clef up one tone).
This is of course againts any artistic rule but it works well
especially in the low register. My instrument was a German System
Fritz Wurlitzer with two duodecime keys to low C.
It had a nice spin-off because I was also able to read the Eb bari-sax
parts on the bass clarinet (that is if you know what to do with the
sharps and flats) On the soprano Bb clar one will also be able to read
Eb alto sax parts.
When going over to symphony orchestra I had to learn to read the bass
clef in A;
I also noticed by the way that there are not many people who can tell
the sound of a French bass clar from a German bassclarinet. Only an
experienced player might be able do so. And let's be frank; the sound
of the low C on the Bb bass is of another nature than the low D
because of tehy shape of the bell.
