The Bass in A was the subject of a good string on the Yahoo Early
Clarinet board at
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/EarlyClarinet/messages.

Among other things, a member mentioned that the Philadelphia Orchestra
owns one. I mentioned a master class in which Ron Reuben (the retired
Philadelphia bass clarinetist) said that he used only a Bb bass. He
said that he had learned the parts on the Bb bass and that he would be
confused if he had used different fingerings. In his opinion,
transposition of even the difficult parts (e.g., La Valse) was
something that any professional player needed to learn.

I suggest, however, that readers skip the last few messages, which
were a renewal by Tony of his criticism of me personally, to which I
unwisely responded.
