Thank you Keith, and to all of you who have been kind enough to write
replies.

I was aware of Michael Drapkin's plans to publish a new book with
transposed parts (via a link from Walter Grabner's website), but couldn't find the
actual book yet. I was also under the impression that a transposed part
from a publisher would cost much more than it does, so thanks to all those who
have provided links and prices.

Thanks also to Dan Leeson, both for his post and for some excellent books!
In principle, I absolutely and completely agree with you. I own a C
clarinet and use it whenever I can, however, I can't afford to buy a bass in A to
add to my collection. And importantly in this case, the part will be
required for a school-age student - whose parents may well still be paying for
the students first 'quality' soprano instrument. They won't be buying a bass
in A, nor will the Music Service, who probably won't even pay for the
transposed part.

So please note that I did not ''suggest that only a B-flat bass clarinet
will do for orchestral playing''. I am suggesting that, in the absence of a
bass in A, then a bass in Bb is much better than nothing (or having cues
played on bassoon/trombone etc.) Surely it's better to have a bass clarinet,
albeit the wrong one, and to give a youngster the chance to play an
interesting and demanding bass part.
