A big thank you to all who responding to this inquiry. Below is a general summary of the responses received.

1. Where do you purchase music? (music store, online, conventions, etc.)

All three are used, but many said that there local music sores are either out of business or not carrying sheet music.

2. If you buy music online, how do you prefer to listen to excerpts? (mp3, scorch, etc.)

mp3 is by far the preferred way to listen to excerpts. I was surprised with how many people indicated that they could not use scorch. Scorch is a free download from sibelius.com that works with both Windows and Mac. It enables one to see the music scroll across the screen while hearing the music with the MIDI instruments built into your computer. With it, one can download and print music from the sibeliusmusic.com website that has about 95,000 scores, many of them for free.

3. Do you take the time to listen to musical excerpts when visiting a website?

Yes was the overwhelming response.

4. If you buy music online, what format do you prefer? (print-on-demand, hard copy, etc.)

Mixed results with this question. Some people were concerned about print quality of on-demand music. I guess a lot depends on your printer as both Sibelius and Finale offer publisher quality notation. On-demand requires assembling the music oneself.

5. Do you find the lesser cost and immediate availability of print-on-demand music beneficial?

Many like the immediacy and cost savings.

6. What influences you when purchasing music? (colleague or teacher recommendation, reviews, having heard the piece on a recording, radio or live)

Hearing the music was the most influential.

7. Do you purchase only standard repertoire or do you seek out new contemporary music?

Once again, a mix of responses.

8. Is the economy affecting your purchasing of music?

There answer to this was clearly no.
