Hi Keith,
I live a too far away to attend. (Curacao Netherlands Antilles)
I am a retired bassclarinettist and learnt to transpose those pieces that matter;
La Valze; the Mahler Symphonies with all the different clefs: BAssclef in A. Maybe you could dwell
a little on the art of transposing and the different clef reading you must master when playing the
bass clarinet.
I started my career in the Amsterdam Police Band where I had to transpose from bass clef in C.
Bassoonparts; it was a worthwhile experience, because you can then also read barisax parts very
easily.
Are you related to the English composer York Bowen, who wrote a quintet for bass clarinet and
string quartet? There is a York Bowen Society in the UK.
Kind regards Art Marshall

Looking forward to meeting List members at the ICA in Austin this week. I am
giving a presentation on "The Rise and Fall of the Bass Clarinet in A" in
the research competition on Wednesday at 2.30 pm. Please come and say hi!
And I hope everyone enjoys it thoroughly.
