but I am sorry to say I have different experiences with this list. My main experience is, that the "klarinet society" is a bunch of goodwilling, friendly and helpful people, but some people are inclined to overreact. I remember several occasions, in which people were offended right away, I will not give you examples, because then I should have to give names, but I will give you one example in which I received about 100 answers, both on my private address and over the list.

It was in 2001, after the start of the Afghan war, that in my eyes was, and still is unjust (war ALWAYS is in my opinion), but the Americans seemed to think it was going to be a brief merry war (that I understood from the reactions) (remember the Germans and Austrians in 1914). I was right away damned. People called me a fascist (I am of Jewish birth), started their mail with "Herr Stein" (I am Dutch, not German), and so on. Some people on this occasion are sunk so deep in my view, that I still don't read there postings to this list.

But as I said, in general I am very happy with this list, people seldom are offensive, but usually are very willing to be helpful, and to discuss topics in a serious and as objective as possible way.

As to the mail by Dan Leeson, that started this discussion, the wording might have been a little bit more careful, and the remark that " if Handel had ..." etc apparently was not as seriously meant by the author as supposed by Dan, but is it worth such a lengthy discussion?
