I don't think that's fair. There has been no nastiness, nor cat
calling, nor ad hominem attacks, nor unreasoning rants. What we've had
is a disagreement over a point of academic interest.

In virtually every case, it is a huge mistake to take anything that is
said on this mailing list personally. It is impossible to express
attitudes and emotions through email. All we have are words. It is way
too easy to interpret a strongly worded assertion as a personal attack,
but that's simply not what was intended. We don't know each other well
enough to mount personal attacks. We're just expressing opinions.

Now, Kathy, that's not fair. We've had one exchange that was (in my
opinion) misinterpreted. You cannot take that one exchange and
extrapolate it to a "general tone...of derision, cynicism and general
disillusionment." This list is not like that. In all seriousness, and
with the best possible intentions, you need to have a thick skin if
you're going to participate actively in academic mailing lists. You
need to be able to ignore things and move on.

I once heard a good quote about this: "the reason that academic debates
are so vitriolic is that the stakes are so low."
