But I understand that Handel DID have clarinets...at least I know of a work by him for two clarinets and horn.

You have no knowledge of what Handel would have done under this or that circumstance.

It is a method of argumentation that is used by someone who has no facts. You hear, "If Mozart had had a contrabassoon he would have used it," and the next thing you know someone is playing K. 361 with a contrabassoon and offering this entirely irrelevant argument to support the change in instrumentation.

If you want to play oboe music on a C clarinet, that's fine, but it is unwise to use this kind of argument to support the change.

It is the rough equivalent of: "If my grandmother had balls, she would have been my grandfather."

If I remember right, I thought you had mentioned before about playing baroque oboe concertos too. I bought the Handel Oboe concerto no.3 (in G minor) transcribed for Bb and I think if Handel had access to clarinet players then he would have written the concerto for clarinet in the first place. I would highly recommend this concerto to you if you are interested. (especially if you like baroque music)
