There is another matter which I don't recall having been covered in this thread but which ought to receive at least a glance of attention. That is, the matter of generously providing friends with photocopies of copyrighted works whether they want them or not.

I commented to my violist (and also teacher of string players) friend the other day that I've had it with giving friends free copies of sheet music which I've sequenced and which I've declared to be in the public domain because more often than not I discover that it never gets played, never again sees the light of day and it isn't appreciated. Making the copies represents time spent spinning my wheels.

If a friend desperately needs a copy of some piece of music, which you happen to have, then you have to make a decision about whether you're going to acquiesce to the request, but in my experience, more often than not, offering to friends unsolicited copies of anything is a waste of time.

A friend of mine commented recently that he had downloaded the hour-long documentary "The Piano: A Love Affair" by Alexander Waugh and had given flash memory copies of the .avi file to two musical friends, extolling the appeal that Waugh had offered on the sound of the piano, the music which can be played on it, his amusing take on the spectrum of personalities of people having like interest, and his obsession with playing at every available moment when he ought better to be earning a living in his career as a writer. Neither recipient of the files watched it, two 4 GB flash memories were now gone, he had likely infringed on the BBC Copyright of the documentary in making the copies and the exercise turned out to be a waste of time.

So, advise your friends to consider the "waste of time argument" against making infringing copies of anything.

Oliver
