"Copyright in its original form". Enthusiastically agreed to by the
Stationers, I believe -- their power to censor in this way was a major
part of their case for a Royal Charter.

Yeah, they (the publishers) wanted their copyright monopoly to be
treated like property. They saw that as in their interest, and
publishers (and some creators, by no means all) have been making that
argument ever since. The law, however, never agreed with them, for good
reasons (ones I've already described).
