Not really. It was supported by advertising. The physical newspaper
is largely subsidized in this manner also. The advertisers bought
the space around the column hoping to get you to look at their
information by providing you the opportunity to read the column for
free. Same system works in radio and TV. But the advertisers did
not buy the column; the rights are retained by the copyright holder.
