But since "distributing unauthorized copies without permission" =
copyright infringement and "copyright infringement" = theft,
therefore distributing unauthorized copies without permission = theft.

Yes, there are fair use provisions, and I, too, believe they should
be more liberal than they currently are. Authors are well aware of
these limited provisions and accept them. Many of the "fair use"
situations involve quotations for reviews and excerpts used for
promotional material, which I'm sure they support, and which provide
for many of the benefits you tout for wholesale copying WITHOUT
giving up control of the work. But the nearest you can get to
comparing "Fair Use" to any physical property equivalent is
"borrowing." The item is not used up or damaged, and the owner
retains his rights of ownership.
