Indeed, the thing sold is support and services; but the model also
relies on the existence of an intellectual commons of software, which is
what Free/Open Source software provides. Red Hat's own contributions to
the software are made available to everyone, but they get back huge
numbers of man-hours of software development time from all the other
companies that contribute.

One example of how you could make that work for music is composers who
make a living from educational projects -- running workshops for
children which involve performance of new works. The interest in having
a creative commons of music that the children can perform, adapt,
rewrite and so on without restriction might be greater than the "loss"
incurred by contributing some of one's own work to that commons.
