So how does this affect the end user? I mean, heck, lets STOP using ALL software that has a patent on it. Which would mean we couldn't use ANYTHING...

Read what the license is for AAC

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Audio_Coding

"No licenses or payments are required to be able to stream or distribute content in AAC format.[34] This reason alone makes AAC a much more attractive format to distribute content than MP3, particularly for streaming content (such as Internet radio).
However, a patent license is required for all manufacturers or developers of AAC codecs.[35] It is for this reason FOSS implementations such as FFmpeg and FAAD are distributed in source form only, in order to avoid patent infringement. (See below under Products that support AAC, Software.)"
I don't see any pain in this. And it's an industry standard rather than some fringe project that in 10 years hasn't taken off (I speak of Ogg here).
And FLAC? Really? I could get a whopping 10-20 albums on my iPod. Whoohoo. And listen to the pristine FLAC quality through my less than pristine headphones.....which sorta defeats the whole purpose.
I'll stick to AAC format for my stuff. It sounds good (256 bitrate) and is a hell of a lot smaller than FLAC......and I am pretty sure Apple isn't going to drop it. Heck, I can still play Quicktime movies from the late 80s on my current Mac.
