I agree that there are plenty of people who use iTunes, and that there is
great market success there. My point is that one of the reasons iTunes is
successful is because of the proprietary software. If people could as
easily move standard mp3 files to their iPod, I believe the sales through
iTunes would drop. Most people simply find it easier to buy from them than
to convert files and then sync, and it is easier still to download directly
to the iPhone or iPod Touch from iTunes than to copy, convert, and sync
other files or CDs you already own. I'm not taking away from what Apple has
accomplished here, just saying that part of what protects the iTunes revenue
is that they don't play well with others in the software and hardware
department. There are many places to legally buy mp3 files for other
players, as well, and they don't require a lot of fussing to move between
players and computers once you do. (Of course, if you are an Apple person,
you have none of that to deal with, but we PC users still do :)
