I disagree with many of his points, but I'm happy to give a Hooray for
him. We should say more Hoorays for list members.

Of course copying is copying, and of course stealing is stealing. But
copying is not stealing, even though sometimes the law penalizes it in
similar ways.

See e.g.: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/2425

... which is written by a publisher with more than a little stake in
people continuing to buy his company's products.

For a more amusing take on this, you might see:

Note that this is a reworking of an original piece by another composer:

... who released it with the deliberate intention that it be re-used,
re-mixed and re-made. Now look around YouTube and see all the different
wonderful creative work people have done based on it.

Isn't that a marvellous thing? :-)

> As a composer who makes a small portion of his income from writing, my bottom line is this; if there are 500 copies of one of my works out in public use, I would like to be paid for all 500 of them. Persons using xeroxed copies have come to me for coaching on some of my works. They thought nothing of it. If I give it away, that's another matter, but it should be my decision.

But it's only fair to point out that there are serious authors,
composers, publishers and other creative artists, with just as much
(maybe more) financially at stake as you, who strongly disagree with
your position. They make their work available under certain terms as a
matter of choice, but they are also of the serious and considered
opinion that the extent of copyright protection urgently needs to be
rolled back.
