In part because to use an iPod you have to use their cumbersome software to
convert other formats. (Unless you have given up on the concept of
copyright for them, as well, and jailbreak your unit, of course.) The idea
of limiting your hardware to proprietary formats is one way to keep the
copyrights intact.

But, I won't even sync mine anymore, because I hate the software so much,
and never use my iPod Touch for music, only for e-books readers and other
functions. It is much easier to use standard mp3 files on my Sensa mp3
player.
