The "sell tours, CDs, DVDs and merchandise, distribute digital audio and
video files for free" model is not such a bad analogy. Something that
could also work would be for live venues (including radio and TV shows)
to pay composers to write new works, and performers to play them, and
distribute digital copies of sheet music and (live) recordings as
publicity material.

Again, it's a model that probably works better for commercial music than
for the more intentionally art-oriented composer, but then again, it's
not clear to me that sheet music sales are a particularly big part of
the income of the average classical composer anyway. (Parts rental is
another matter.)
