Klarinet Archive - Posting 000062.txt from 2010/07
From: "Williams, Kathy" <Kathy.Williams@-----.com> Subj: [kl] The benefits of YouTube for new music Date: Tue, 06 Jul 2010 19:25:34 -0400
Copyright aside, I think YouTube could be of enormous benefit to modern composers. Sure, 30 people or so heard the arrangements by Sclater and Simon Sargon's piece Deep Ellum Nights at the concert, but by posting the performance on YouTube, you are reaching an audience of millions, and by further posting on Facebook, especially with its networking capabilities, you are bringing the work to the attention of even more people. Yes, I suppose you run the risk of plagiarism from someone who has the time to listen to the video a hundred times and transcribe it, but your average high school/college student is going to want to buy the music and play it themselves. I am regularly asked where I got the music from, and will always refer it to the distributor from whom I purchased the music. Yes, I get requests to copy the music and send it electronically, which I always refuse. My only alterior motive is the whistful thought the right person might notice one of my videos, but I'm not holding my breath...
Kind regards
