John, I think your approach is a very good one and I commend you for it. At=
bottom it is a trust relationship between you and your purchasers, and of =
course that trust can be abused. Here is a link to an article on the ethica=
l balance between copyright owners and purchasers that explores the inheren=
t tensions that exist in the current marketplace. There is no one answer, o=
nly some that are better than others, or some that are better from people a=
nd not others, with the trick being to try and devise one that permits you =
to make money and that works for the majority of your customers.Bill

I am just curious, considering the discussion here, about what list members
might think about my copyright solution for my business. I mostly sell sheet
music on my website at www.music4woodwinds.com and about 95% of it is for a
download of a PDF file that the buyer can print themselves. =
=
When I started down that road about 6=A0 years ago, I knew that since the
buyers had the music on their computer, there was no way for me to tell them
they couldn't print as many copies as they wanted, and share the music just
as they wanted. So with that in mind I adopted what I call a "Special
License".
=
"Special License: JB Linear Music gives you this Special License to allow
freer use of the music you have purchased. In addition to the normal rights
given to a purchaser of copyrighted music, you may freely copy this work by
any means for non-commercial purposes. You may not remove or cover the JB
Linear Music copyright information. You may not sell, rent, lease, or
sublicense music prints or music files from JB Linear Music to another
party. You may publicly perform this work without permission, only promising
to give proper credit. All other copyright powers including recording
royalties are retained by the copyright holder, JB Linear Music."
=
This may dilute my market some, but I believe in the greater good that this
policy represents.
