Since the subject of copyright has come up and since we seem to have a
couple of experts on the list, I wonder if they could shed some light
on some aspects of the prohibition of using copies for performance.
We're told that copies may not be made for use in performance, with
the single exception of emergencies, but there are some practical
matters that sometimes make this rule difficult to follow, such as the
following:

1. A copy of a single page may be needed because of a bad page turn.

2. A performer with compromised eyesight may need enlarged copies.

3. When a single composition is published within an anthology (as
often happens with choral music), it may be awkward or even impossible
to perform from the book. What about a singer who is physically
unable to hold the book up? Does it matter whether the piece being
performed is also published separately?

In cases such as the above, is it in principle necessary to obtain the
copyright holder's permission before making copies?

Thanks.
