I don't know that that's necessarily true--there's plenty of tolerated
mediocrity in professional music, too. Questionable intonation is a
pretty common problem, for instance.
As I see it, the biggest difference between sports players and
musicians, when it comes to "errors," is that when an athlete messes
up it's usually pretty easy to spot, whereas with music it often takes
a certain level of training, skill, talent, or familiarity with the
piece being played to spot the mistakes--and that's assuming the
mistakes are actually audible to begin with.
Also, I've never heard of a ball player getting tenure...
