Most of these groups have recently changed status from all community volunteer groups to a paying ensemble. The politics that is being witnessed here is a result of this and unfortunately not uncommon in the area. It is frustrating and unfair and frankly the reason I don't play in these groups myself. But that was my choice. I found that much less frustrating than dealing with this type of situation. I can definitly understand your frustration but again I don't believe there is much you can do about it unless there is someone in the symphony who is longstanding there and is willing to go to bat for you.

Maybe you should ask the advice of the local flute professor..
It's clearly unacceptable that you, even as a 'probationary' player, should
be penalized for missing a re-scheduled concert.
The lack of a Union local is a shame. It seems to me that navigating the
local politics is the challenge here. I wish you luck.
