Assunto: [kl] Introducing myself in the (ethnic) clarinet forum

Hi everyone,
Excuse me if this message disturbs any of you members. I stumbled into this
list while researching the clarinet in turkish music. I'm a 34
year-old brazilian popular clarinet and saxophone player and I've been
researching bulgarian and turkish clarinet styles for about a year and a
half, and would like to exchange info and ideas with other musicians about
these topics (though I couldn't or didn=B4t know how to define this specific
topic in my subscription options). I also have a good deal of brazilian
popular music and jazz material, solo transcriptions, arrangements, chamber
music, etc. I'd like to share if anyone's interested.

I've been playing clarinet for about 10 years and saxophone (tenor and alto)
for 4 or 5. I started my musical background as classical guitarist at about
15 and graduated on that instrument knowing that I needed another instrument
to provide for the musical experiences I was searching. So I took up the Bb
clarinet as if it was a C instrument and started playing choro and samba
informally here in Rio de Janeiro, which, along with the harmony
I learned from the guitar, helped a lot with improvising. So besides
working with brazilian popular genres, I took an interest in studying jazz
alongside, although I never had the chance to play it professionally.
I have a nice repertoire of Buddy DeFranco and Bill Smith transcriptions I
did to share (most in Finale formats).

Then about 2 years ago I started collecting gipsy and eastern music
recordings, and started transcribing and learning bulgarian, romanian and
turkish dance tunes, with the purpose of researching the connections between
these cultures and brazilian music in my work as a composer and arranger.
So I'd be interested in contacting musicians with a similar background and
influences to exchange ideas, transcriptions, recordings, etc.

Sincerely,
Pedro Paes
