Quintet of the Americas Mannahatta Environmental Concert on June 17 at =
Langston Hughes Library and Cultural Center in Corona, Queens
New York, NY =96 Quintet of the Americas woodwind ensemble will present =
Mannahatta, a concert on Thursday, June 17 =96 7:00 PM at the Langston =
Hughes Library and Cultural Center, 100-01 Northern Boulevard in Corona, =
Queens. This event is part of the Quintet=92s Mannahatta concert series, =
presenting environmentally-themed music throughout the five boroughs of =
New York City. These concerts present this music by recalling sounds of =
the natural environment heard in New York when Henry Hudson sailed into =
the harbor in 1609, and bring attention to the changes in our =
environment in the last 400 years and inspire hope for an =
environmentally sound future.
Repertoire for this concert includes Mannahatta Windows by Robert Deemer =
and Hudson River Quintet by Brooklyn-based Christopher Kaufman for =
woodwind quintet with surround-sound audio tape and video of the Hudson =
River and environmental paintings by Ken Cro-Ken. Ellis Island by Stuart =
Balcomb will also be presented, along with other nature-inspired works - =
Duke Ellington=92s Azalea, Queens resident James Cohn=92s Strutting =
Butterflies and Colombian composer Jorge Olaya Munoz=92 El Picaflor.
Composer Christopher Kaufman (www.chkaufman.com/hudson.htm) and =
environmental painter Ken Cro-Ken (www.kencroken.com/) will join the =
musicians in a discussion with the audience on the environment.
The Mannahatta Project is reconstructing the ecology of Manhattan when =
Henry Hudson first sailed by in 1609 and comparing it to what we know of =
the island today, discovering the environmental foundation of the city. =
More about it at themannahattaproject.org/.
The June 17 concert is free and open to the public. For more =
