As a teenager living in Suffern, New York, I used to go to West Point on
Sundays to hear the band give concerts. I was often overwhelmed with how
magnificently the band played.

Later, when I went into the army during the Korean conflict, I won an
audition to be part of the band, but I did not want to sign up for a three
year tour and this resulted in automatic rejection.

I remember the way the band played, "The George Washington Bicentennial
March." It was an absolute killer. I think that Larry Combs was one of the
players in the first clarinet section, and maybe many other players who I
eventually got to know.

That was some band!!
