My apologies, you are quite right. I was guilty of writing from memory and
not checking my references. I used the 1921 Edition Russe, and the basses
are in Bb throughout.

The reason that I got confused was that I had referred to Stravinsky's use
of bass clarinet in Rite of Spring for a different purpose. He (or his
publisher in the 1921 edition) uses German notation (a second above sounding
pitch) for bass clef and French notation (a ninth above sounding pitch) for
treble clef parts; in contrast to Wagner, who uses bass and treble clef
consistently (hence treble clef parts have to be transposed up an octave by
a modern player). Stravinsky's mix is sometimes called Russian notation.

Many thanks for setting me right.

In doing research for a corrected edition for use in the U.S., I have had
the manuscript consulted and seen 7 published scores of Rite of Spring, but
I did not find the use of A bass clarinet for either Bass Clarinet I or II.
Both parts are written in both treble and bass clef always with a Bb
transposition.
Would you let us know the rehearsal system where you saw this change to A
bass clarinet from Bb bass clarinet?
