The recording of Hill Song No. 1 I own is a Grainger's original
orchestration, which is very unusual =96 two piccolos, six oboes, six
english horns, six bassoons and a double bassoon. I have also heard a
version for pianos, and a version for orchestra, but I think it loses
something in the translation - the sound of all those double reeds is
just amazing! Grainger did several versions of both pieces - not sure
which one(s) include alto clarinet.
