Well, I'm lucky enough to play alto clarinet in the Clare Fischer Clarinet
Choir. Even Clare has the alto sometimes doubling the 4th clarinet or the
bass clarinet. There is a lot of independence, though. For those of you in
Los Angeles, we have a gig coming up, June 22nd at Vibrato. It's a
wonderful group. Gary Foster and Don Shelton share most of the solo work, but
you'll hear bass clarinet improvising as well as some alto clarinet! There are
two recordings out from this ensemble.
FWIW, I play a Leblanc alto with Selmer C* mouthpieces, one by Glenn
Johnson and one by John Reilly. I use old brown box Ricos that I have hoarded
over the years.
Take care,
Phil Feather

My experience is that Concert Band Alto Clarinet parts mostly
duplicate the Alto Sax or 3rd Clarinet parts with little arranger time/
brain power being utilized to use the instrument for its own
(?)values(?).
